The Magnolia grandiflora ‘Southern Charm’ or Magnolia Teddy Bear is an attractive drought tolerant
evergreen that provides year-round interest in any landscape. This is a compact specimen that features
glossy, dark green leaves with a velvety reddish-brown undercoat. During the warmer months this upright
grower displays large brilliant white flowers (6 to 8 inches) that emanate a sweet fragrance.
The Magnolia Teddy Bear thrives in full sun and is best planted in Zones 7 to 9. In order to establish a
deep, extensive root system it is essential to follow a regular watering schedule. Less watering is
required once the tree is fully established. A general purpose fertilizer can be used to feed the tree
before new growth begins in the spring. Pruning is optimal in the winter and should be done yearly to
maintain the trees compact form. This tree matures to a height of around 16 to 20 feet and can grow
as wide as 10 to 12 feet.
